Woman Dies in Fire Allegedly Started By Husband in `Botched Murder Suicide'

CARSON (CNS) - A 66-year-old woman was killed in a fire today that authorities believe was started by her husband in a “botched murder-suicide.''

Deputies were dispatched at about 3 a.m. to the 1000 block of Renton Street, a few blocks from 223rd Street, for a reported fire, according to Deputy Trina Schrader of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Four family members were inside the home when the fire started, but all eventually exited, Schrader said. The victim, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital, where she died, according to Schrader.

One of the woman's sons told investigators he saw his father, who is the victim's 59-year-old husband, set the house on fire with a can of gasoline, according to Schrader.

One of the victim's sons, who is 36, was taken to a hospital withminor injures, and a second son, who is 39, was not injured in the fire, Schrader said. It was not immediately clear which son told deputies he saw the suspect start the fire.

The suspect was taken to a hospital in serious condition, according to Schrader.
