Researchers: Coronavirus Can Trick Immune System into Attacking Brain

Scientists are now saying that COVID-19 can result in more severe, long lasting damage in those with the virus.

A team of German scientists believe they've figured out why COVID-19 can result in tremors, seizures and unconsciousness.

They've determined the virus "tricks" its victim's immune system into attacking the brain.

Study coauthor, Dr. Christiana Franke, says the immune systems of coronavirus sufferers produce auto-antibodies that attack their tissues and organs after mistakenly identifying them as problems.

"Remarkably, all 11 patients examined in the present study had strong auto-antibodies targeting the brain, which are not normally found in cerebrospinal fluid of healthy people."

Now efforts are underway to determine why this happens, Franke adds.
