HOLLYWOOD (CNS) - CBS will rerun colorized episodes of “The Dick Van Dyke Show'' from 8-9 p.m. tonight in tribute to series creator Carl Reiner.
Reiner died of natural causes Monday at age 98.
The first episode airing on “The Dick Van Dyke Show -- Now In Living Color! A Special Tribute to Carl Reiner'' is “Coast to Coast Big Mouth,'' in which Laura Petrie (Mary Tyler Moore) blurts out a closely guarded secret on a national television quiz show, revealing that comedian Alan Brady (Reiner) wears a toupee.
Bill Persky and Sam Denoff won the 1966 outstanding writing achievement in comedy for the episode, which was the series' fifth and final season premiere, originally airing on Sept. 15, 1965.
The second episode is “October Eve,'' which concerns a painting of Laura that returns to haunt her when, despite her having posed fully clothed, the artist (Reiner) takes the liberty of “undraping'' her. It originally aired on April 8, 1964.
“In `October Eve,' I got a chance to perform on the show as someone other than Alan Brady, and I loved the character of Carpetna the artist as soon as I read it,'' Reiner said in 2017.
The episode was also written by Persky and Denoff.
The colorized versions of the episodes originally aired on CBS on Dec. 11, 2016, and Dec. 22, 2017, as part of “The Dick Van Dyke Show -- Now In Living Color!'' specials. Reiner personally supervised the colorization of the shows and was among the executive producers.
“The Dick Van Dyke Show'' aired from 1961-66, winning 15 Emmys, including outstanding comedy series in each of its final four seasons.
