The Starbucks barista who was publicly shamed by a customer who refused to wear a mask now has nearly $80,000 coming his way.
24-year-old Lenin Gutierrez was working at a San Diego Starbucks about a week ago when a woman who wasn't wearing a mask came in to make an order. He said he politely asked her if she had a face mask to wear -- which is the required store policy -- and the woman then flipped him off, starting swearing, and took a picture of him. She later posted the barista's photo on her Facebook page.
The woman's post said in part, "Meet Lenin from Starbucks who refused to serve me cause I'm not wearing a mask. Next time I will wait for the cops."
But her Facebook post saw an outpouring of support for the barista instead... Someone started a GoFundMe page with a goal of $1,000 in virtual tips for him, but now it's over $90,000.
"Lenin has said that he plans to use some of the money to pursue his dreams of becoming a dancer," the GoFundMe page says. "He also wants to donate to some organizations in the San Diego community."
"We respectfully request customers follow social distancing and safety protocols recommended by public health officials, including wearing a facial covering when visiting our stores," a Starbucks spokesperson said after the incident.
