POMONA (CNS) - A known gang member who tried to run away from police in Pomona while armed with a loaded .22 caliber rifle was jailed this morning in lieu of $35,000 bail.
Officers with the Pomona Police Department's Major Crimes Task Force were in the area of 700 West Holt Avenue, near White Avenue, about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, when they spotted a documented gang member acting suspiciously, holding a large object near his waist, according to Sgt. M. Medellin.
As officers approached the suspect, identified as Isaac Rodriguez, 21, of Pomona, he ran off, trying to conceal the weapon, eventually running into a bar in the area, where he ditched the rifle inside the door of the business, Medellin said.
Officers quickly detained Rodriguez and found the weapon, a loaded .22 caliber rifle, Medellin said.
“Rodriguez admitted to possessing the firearm and said he discarded it because he didn't want to be arrested,'' Medellin said. “Rodriguez is a documented gang member with an extensive history of being contacted and/or arrested by the police.''
Rodriguez was due in court Friday in Pomona.
