Police in Long Beach say two men were fatally shot today by a man who said the two were trying to break into his home.
The shooting occurred shortly after midnight near 10th Street and Almond Court, according to multiple reports. At least one man was found dead at that location inside the home, while the second man was discovered not far from the scene. Police have not released their identities pending notification of their relatives.
“Officers were dispatched ... regarding an assault with a deadly weapon, after the caller stated that he had shot a person who broke into his residence,'' Long Beach Police Officer Ivan Garcia said in a statement.
“Upon arrival, officer(s) located a male adult unresponsive inside of the home with a gunshot wound to his upper torso. Long Beach Fire Department arrived on scene and determined the male deceased at the scene.
“A second male adult, who is believed to be involved, was located on the street at 11th Street and Gundry Avenue,'' the statement continued. “The male sustained a gunshot wound to his upper torso and was unresponsive. Long Beach Fire arrived and determined the second male also deceased at the scene.''
Police are attempting to determine whether the two deaths are connected. The man who shot the two men reportedly contacted police following the incident. He was later taken to the hospital to treat unspecified injuries.
