SANTA CLARITA (CNS) - A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy was struck by an SUV in a hit-and-run crash in Santa Clarita and the driver was on the loose this morning.

Deputies were conducting a traffic stop on a felony warrant suspect near Tyler Lane and American Beauty Drive about 10:45 p.m. Thursday when the deputy was hit, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department confirmed it took one patient to a hospital in unknown condition.

The suspect vehicle, described as a gray Range Rover with Florida license plates, was found abandoned at a gas station in Newhall, but the driver and others in the vehicle were being sought, the department said.

Shortly before midnight, the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's station tweeted its thanks to all who expressed concern for the deputy.

“The deputy who was involved in an incident over on Tyler Lane... thankfully is going to be ok,'' the tweet said.

About 12:15 a.m., the Los Angeles Police Department sent a message of support on Twitter to the department.

“The LAPD is extremely glad to hear the injuries to the (sheriff's) Deputy do not appear to be life threatening,'' police said “This (Santa Clarita Valley sheriff's) Deputy went out... to protect all of us – because public safety does not stop. It's 24/7. 365 days per year.''

A description of the driver was not immediately available.
