Pac-12 Allows Athletic Workouts to Resume in June

US-EDUCATION-CRIME-ABUSE

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The Pac-12, which includes USC and UCLA, announced today that the conference will allow for voluntary in-person athletic workouts for all sports to commence on June 15, subject to the decision of each individual campus and where permissible by relevant governmental entities.

The decision was made at a meeting of the Pac-12 CEO Group on Tuesday and follows the decision last week by the NCAA to permit conferences and schools to reopen for on-campus voluntary athletically related activities in all sports as of June 1.

“As educational institutions, our highest obligation is to the health and welfare of our students, faculty and staff,'' Pac-12 CEO Group Chair and University of Colorado Boulder Chancellor Philip DiStefano said. “As we considered the pros and cons of taking steps that can pave a path to returning to play, those considerations were foremost, guided by the advice of our own medical experts along with public health officials.''

USC Sports Information Director Tim Tessalone said the school had no immediate announcement on when individual sports workouts could resume at the downtown campus.

Shana Wilson, associate athletic director for communications at UCLA, said it was “a decision that will be made in conjunction with campus leadership, and in compliance with local public health guidelines.''

The PAC-12 is still prohibiting organized, in-person team activities of any type.
