LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A heat advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. today for much of the Southland, including the coastal area stretching into downtown Los Angeles, Santa Monica Mountains and the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and San Gabriel Valleys.
National Weather Service forecasters said temperatures are expected to hit 95 degrees in many areas today, with even the beaches reaching highs near 90.
The NWS warned residents to drink lots of fluids and seek out air conditioning, while avoiding the sun.
“Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside,” according to the NWS. “When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight clothing when possible.”
Gusting winds that buffeted much of the area Friday morning died down by Friday afternoon, prompting the NWS to cancel a wind advisory that had been in effect in some mountain areas.
“Well above normal temperatures will continue into the middle of next week,” according to the NWS. “The warmest days will be (Friday) afternoon then again Tuesday afternoon. Northerly winds will continue to diminish.”
Forecasters said today's temperatures will actually be slightly lower than Friday, with more noticeable cooling on Sunday and Monday, although temperatures “will still remain noticeably above seasonal normals.”
Temperatures will shoot up again on Tuesday, “with many areas in the 80s to lower 90s,” according to the NWS. A cooling trend will kick in next Wednesday through Friday.
