Los Angeles County and other parts of the state have mandated that residents wear face coverings when out in public. There are a lot of masks out there. So we are breaking down what they do and which one you should get.
N95 respirators
The N95 face mask is backed by the World Health Organization as suitable for medical use. These masks offer the most protection and are to be used by doctors and nurses when treating sick patients. The CDC does not recommend these for the general public, calling them "critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for health care workers and other medical first responders."
Disposable surgical masks
Most popular covering used by the general public during this global pandemic. They are considered good to use for healthcare workers not working in the ICU. These masks are disposable and are not intended to be used more than once.
Cycling masks
They are intended to provide a layer of protection from airborne particles, yet haven't been tested regarding the coronavirus. Just like the N-95's and surgical masks, they are hard to come by.
Respirator gas mask
Typically used when painting or dealing with chemicals. They have valves built in with filters that can keep out coronavirus.
Cloth masks
Many of the masks mentioned above are sold out. So people are also resulting to cloth masks. These masks are not medial-grad. They also may not be effective in close contact with someone carrying the virus — so precautions like social distancing and limited trips outside should still be strictly in place.
T-shirts, bandanas, and scarves
The CDC has released a guide on how to properly use our own clothing as masks. They should fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face, be secured with ties or ear loops, include multiple layers of fabric, allow for breathing without restriction, and be able to be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape." They aren't medical graded as help but can help someone from not spreading the disease.
