Lowe was was the head football coach and security guard at the Parkland Rose High School in Portland in May 2019, and approached a high school student who walked into the school armed with a shotgun. Lowe managed to disarm the student and embrace him in a hug, which was seen around the world after surveillance video was released.
"In that time, I felt compassion for him," Lowe told CNN affiliate KATU back in October. "A lot of times, especially when you're young, you don't realize what you're doing until it's over."
Lowe, who prevented a possible tragedy, will be honored for his "courage, sacrifice, commitment, integrity and citizenship" along with five other recipients at a later date. Read more about his story on Sports Illustrated.
