Millions of Northern California Residents Ordered to Stay Home for 3 Weeks

Residents of California's Bay Area have been ordered to stay at home for three weeks in an effort to stop the coronavirus from spreading.

The quarantine will affect almost 7 million people in six counties: San Francisco, Marin, Santa Clara, San Mateo, Alameda and Contra Costa.

Officials say they will make exceptions for people who provide "essential services" like public safety, sanitation and medical.

Santa Clara County public health officer, Dr. Sara Cody says that though the temporary change in routine is annoying, it's necessary.

"The health officers from the largest jurisdictions in the San Francisco Bay Area are united and we are taking this step together to offer the best protection to our respective communities."
