PALM SPRINGS (CNS) - All concerts, sporting events and field trips for students in the Palm Springs Unified School District were postponed until at least mid-April out of concern of coronavirus, district officials announced today.

The cancellation extends to all events that would include members of the public who are not students of each particular school, or students from other schools, including student performances, assemblies, parent nights and other events.

Sports teams will still be able to practice, said district spokesman Joan Boiko.

The district said the policy will be in place at least until the end of spring break, which runs April 6-17.

The move followed a blanket order by county health officials on Thursday prohibiting public gatherings that exceed 250 people as a precautionary measure to mitigate the potential spread of the virus that causes COVID-19. The announcement came after a sixth coronavirus case was confirmed in Riverside County Thursday. Like the other five, it was in the Coachella Valley.

Superintendent Sandra Lyon said Desert Sands and Coachella Valley Unified School Districts will be making the same changes. Neither of those districts responded to inquiries.

Riverside County Department of Public Health has not yet directed any county school closures, Lyons said.

Other changes announced Thursday by the district include the barring of all volunteers from all campuses. Student visits to campuses where they do not attend are not allowed.

Student performances will be held for students of each particular school, and parents and families would not be allowed to attend.

The Palm Springs Unified School District comprises 28 schools across multiple cities including Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Desert Hot Springs and Thousand Palms.
