Pete Buttigieg is leading the Democratic presidential field in the Iowa caucuses after the Iowa Democratic Party released the initial returns following a lengthy delay due to a technical problem with the app they were using to report the results.
Iowa Democratic Party Chairman Troy Price apologized for the delay and said that they had the returns from 62% of the precincts.
"The reporting of the results and circumstances surrounding the 2020 Iowa Democratic Party caucuses were unacceptable," he said at a news conference. "As chair of the party, I apologize deeply for this."
Buttigieg is in the lead with 26.9%, while Bernie Sanders came in second place with 25.1%. Elizabeth Warren is sitting in third place with 18.3%, while Joe Biden is in fourth place with 15.6%.
Price promised that the results were accurate, and that the data was secure.
"The one thing they will say is that the underlying data that — the raw data — is secure. It was always secure. This was a coding error in one of the pieces on the backend, but the raw data, the data that has come in, is secure," he said.
The race is still too close to call, and Price did not say when he expects the final results to be released.
