Dramatic Video Shows Car Plunging Off California Cliff

Video footage released by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office in California on Wednesday appears to show the moment when a car plunged off a cliff along Highway 1 near Gray Whale Cove State Beach in Mateo County.

The video, shot by a passing motorist driving in the southbound lane, shows a dark-colored SUV speeding along the shoulder before it plunges off the cliff without slowing or attempting to stop, the Mercury News reported. Sheriff's deputies were joined by crews with the San Mateo County Fire Department in searching the area for any signs of the vehicle and the driver. However, the work has been slow-going and they have not yet located the vehicle.

Rescue crews used helicopters, boats and jet skis to search for any survivors or other evidence, but their efforts were hampered due to a high surf advisory in the area.

Authorities say they're investigating the cause of the crash, but the video provided by the motorist doesn't show why the car drove over the cliff.

"The conditions are just too dangerous for them to continue a search," Bert Diaz, a spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol told the news outlet. "And that’s expected today and for the next couple days as well."
