A substitute teacher in Massachusetts was fired after she allegedly smoked marijuana in front of a classroom full of students. Several students at North Attleborough High School reported the teacher, who has not been identified, after she started smoking while discussing marijuana, which is recreationally legal in the state for anybody over the age of 21. It is still against the law to use it on public or federal property.
The school's principal, Peter Haviland, took immediate action and fired the teacher. He issued a statement praising the students who reported the teacher.
“The incident at North Attleborough High School was entirely unexpected and unprecedented, and it was in no way a reflection of the great students, faculty, staff, and families of this great school and community,” he said in a statement. “Instead, the quick actions of the students to report their concerns is an accurate reflection of the values of this school and community and serves as comforting evidence demonstrating that our students share and uphold these common values of safety and appropriateness within our school.”
Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident, and it is unclear if the teacher will face criminal charges or if other students were smoking marijuana as well.
