Rain System Arrives Early, Meaning a Damp Evening Commute

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Intermittent rain showers are expected to continue through the weekend after a weak storm system moved into the area earlier than expected, forecasters said.

Precipitation moved into the region from the southwest on Friday, bringing rain to some areas shortly after noon, hours earlier than initially anticipated. By mid-afternoon, however, the storm band had dropped relatively small amounts of rain in most areas, mostly around one-tenth of an inch, according to the National Weather Service.

Rainy conditions are expected to persist in the Southland through most of the weekend with the forecast calling for a 70 percent chance of rain today, and the main storm system lingering offshore. The system is expected to be far weaker than the one that doused the region earlier this week.

“Overall, it still looks like a damp weekend with on-and-off light showers,” according to the NWS, adding that the latest forecast suggests rainfall amounts “might be on the high side, but either way impacts will be minimal.”

This weekend's storm is expected to drop between a quarter-inch and a half-inch of rain, according to the NWS, although the volume will climb to between a half-inch and three-quarters of an inch in foothill and mountain areas.

The snow level will remain above 7,000 feet. Also expected are south- to-southeast winds gusting at between 20 and 50 miles per hour.

Forecasters said rain should be fully moved out of the area by Monday morning, and the region should stay dry with potentially above-normal temperatures through next Friday.
