Scarlett Johansson is ready for combat in the first teaser trailer for Black Widow, arriving in theaters next summer.
The first trailer, teased Tuesday morning (December 3), depicts Black Widow’s life after the events of Captain America: Civil War, which involves the character being forced to confront her past with help from her family of assassins. “I’ve lived a lot of lives, but I’m done running from my past,” the super-spy says in the action-packed preview. “We have to go back to where it all started.”
Johansson executive produced the Cate Shortland-helmed prequel from Marvel Studios, starring Midsommar actress Florence Pugh, Stranger Things’ David Harbour, and The Favourite’s Rachel Weisz, and O.T. Fagbenle.
According to an interview Shortland gave this summer, fans can expect Black Widow to expound upon the titular heroine’s uncharted past. "She's got so many secrets, she's got so much vulnerability and I think that's what makes her such a great heroine," she told Collider in July. "In this film we get to understand her past and put the pieces of herself together and come out a whole person.”
Speaking more in-depth about her role as the Russian spy at Comic-Com in San Diego, Johansson said she was excited to be depicting a more vulnerable side of Black Widow in the upcoming spinoff flick. "I get to play Natasha as a fully realized woman and in all of her many facets. I’m excited for fans to see the flawed side of her, what she perceives to be the flawed side of her," she said at the time. "I’m looking to wipe out some of that red in my ledger so you guys will be seeing more of that."
Black Widow opens in theaters on May 1, 2020.
