Toy Importer Charged with Manufacturing $1.4 Million in Counterfeits

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The owner of an El Monte toy import business is facing charges of manufacturing and possessing more than $1.4 million in counterfeit goods, including plush toys, backpacks and playing cards, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office announced today.

Counterfeited brands listed in the felony complaint against Wan Piao, also known as Edison Piao or Edisson Park, include Pokemon, Hello Kitty, Angry Birds, Lego Ninjago, JanSport, Shopkins and Super Mario.

Prosecutors with the Consumer Protection Division allege Piao, 37, manufactured and inventoried more than half a million knock-off items.

The goods were discovered by law enforcement at Piao's two El Monte warehouses on March 21, 2017, according to the District Attorney's Office. A warrant was filed Oct. 4, and Piao was arrested Nov. 1.

Piao, who is being held in lieu of $370,000 bail, is scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 4 on seven felony counts of counterfeit of a registered mark with an allegation of taking more than $500,000 through fraud and embezzlement.

If convicted as charged, Piao faces up to 12 years in jail.
