LA HABRA (CNS) - A social media threat that police ultimately deemed not credible prompted the precautionary closure of Whittier Christian High School today.
About 10:30 p.m. Sunday, La Habra police “received numerous calls about a threat made on social media” that “indicated a possible shooting at Whittier Christian High School, according to a statement the department posted on Facebook.
“School administrators were contacted and responded to the station to assist in the investigation. Officers identified the source of the information which led to an address in the city of Whittier. Officers made contact at the residence with a juvenile male and his parents. After a lengthy interview with the juvenile, officers do not believe there is a credible threat to the school.”
Classes will resume on Tuesday, according to Carl Martinez, head of school at Whittier Christian High.
Though the campus at 501 N. Beach Blvd. will remain closed for the day, extra-curricular activities such as sports will take place as usual on this afternoon, Martinez said.
He said administrators decided to cancel classes about 1 this morning as a precaution while police conducted their investigation. Administrators were told by police about 2:30 a.m. that the threat was not deemed credible, but determined that it was best to leave the closure in place, Martinez said.
