'Midway' Opens Atop Box Office On Veterans Day Weekend

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - “Midway” opened as the No. 1 film at the box office on Veterans Day weekend with $17.5 million, according to industry estimates released today.

The film -- starring Woody Harrelson, Mandy Moore, Patrick Wilson and Dennis Quaid -- is based on the pivotal June 1942 World War II naval battle that helped turn the tide of the fighting in the United States' favor, several months after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

“Doctor Sleep,” a sequel of sorts to Stephen King's “The Shining,” opened in second place with $14.1 million Friday through Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada.

The family comedy “Playing With Fire” opened in third place with $12.8 million, Comscore reported.

“Last Christmas” opened in fourth place with $11.6 million, followed by “Terminator: Dark Fate,” which made $10.8 million in its second weekend in theaters.

Rounding out the 10 top-grossing films of the weekend were “Joker” ($9.2 million), “Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil” ($8 million), “Harriet” ($7.2 million), “Zombieland 2: Double Tap” ($4.3 million) and “The Addams Family” ($4.1 million).
