An Army veteran who lost his genitals in a roadside bombing in Afghanistan is now "fully functional" after undergoing the world's first penis and scrotum transplant.
The doctors who performed the surgery have provided an update to the New England Journal of Medicine where Johns Hopkins' Dr. Rick Redett discussed the success of the surgery.
"The graft has taken nicely. Rejection hasn't been much of an issue, and he has very good return of function."
That "function" includes the ability to have erections and be able to urinate while standing.
While you may think this is an unusual circumstance,it apparently isn't wildly uncommon.
According to the Journal of Urology, 1,367 soldiers suffered genital injuries while fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq from 2001 to 2013.
