LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Funeral services were pending today for a veteran Los Angeles Fire Department captain who died while off duty, authorities said.
“The Los Angeles Fire Department is deeply saddened to announce the off-duty passing of an active duty member of our department, Capt. James V. Como,” LAFD spokesman Brian Humphrey said. “Rest in peace, Capt. Como.”
Como, a 29-year veteran of the LAFD, died on Sunday, Humphrey said. The cause of his death was not disclosed. His final assignment was at Fire Station 84 in Woodland Hills.
“It is with a heavy heart that we mourn the passing of LAFD Capt. James V. Como,” Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said in a statement. “He served our city with selfless dedication. Our hearts go out to his loved ones and his LAFD sisters and brothers in this moment of deep sorrow.”
Como is survived by his parents; his sister; his two sons; and his brother-in-law, LAFD Capt. Joe Szabados.
