Blaze Erupts in Field near Lake Mathews

LAKE MATHEWS (CNS) - A brush fire broke out today in an open field just northwest of Lake Mathews and burned roughly 25 acres, but no structures were immediately threatened.

The non-injury Sobrante Fire was reported at 12:05 p.m. in the area of El Sobrante Road and La Sierra Avenue, according to the Riverside County Fire Department. Forward progress was stopped at 35 acres.

Multiple engine crews were sent to the location and encountered flames moving at a moderate rate through high grass, fire officials said.

Cal Fire water-dropping helicopters and air tankers were summoned to make runs on the brusher, forming initial containment lines to bound the fire on several flanks.

With winds blowing less than 5 mph, firefighters were not contending with gust hazards as they worked their way around the brusher.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
