WHITTIER (CNS) - Firefighters have stopped the progress of a brush fire that charred about five acres of terrain in the Whittier Narrows area today.
The fire was 50% contained by lines of cleared vegetation as of 5:52 p.m., Los Angeles County Fire Department Dispatch Supervisor Cheryl Sims said. Ground crews were being assisted by at least one water-dropping helicopter.
The fire was reported shortly after 4 p.m. at 555 N. Durfee Ave., Sims said.
There were no immediate reports of any structures being threatened, she said. No injuries were reported.
Firefighters reported 15-20 ``homeless camps'' in the area, Sims said. It was not immediately known whether anyone in the camps was responsible for the blaze.
