Fullerton Brusher Threatens Homes, Other Structures

FULLERTON (CNS) - A one- to two-acre brush fire in Fullerton today threatened a hospital, YMCA and some homes, prompting evacuations and the closure of a major thoroughfare, but crews were making good progress surrounding the blaze.

The fire broke out just before 3:40 p.m. at 1700 N. Harbor Boulevard, near the Brea Dam Park, said Fullerton-Brea Fire Division Chief Kathy Schaefer.

Harbor Boulevard closed between Brea Boulevard Bastanchury Road.

There was ``light to moderate'' fuel for the blaze, which was creeping toward St. Jude Medical Center, a YMCA, public tennis court and homes in the area, Schaefer said. A senior living facility and home was also threatened, she added.

``But right now it sounds like we've been able to get a handle on it,'' Schaefer said.

Ground crews were being aided by water-dropping aircraft.
