LOS ANGELES (CNS) - In an epic battle between some classic villains, Disney's ``Maleficent: Mistress of Evil'' maintained her perch atop the North American box office over the weekend, according to final figures released today.
``Maleficent,'' starring Angelina Jolie, earned $19.4 million between Friday and Sunday to remain in first place, according to box-office tracker Comscore. ``Joker,'' the dark origin tale of Batman's arch-nemesis, starring Joaquin Phoenix, finished a close second with $19.2 million.
``Joker'' has earned more than $277.9 million in North American during its four weeks in theaters.
The animated reboot of ``The Addams Family'' placed third with $12 million, followed by another Halloween-themed film, ``Zombieland: Double Tap,'' which earned $11.8 million.
The horror/thriller ``Countdown'' debuted in fifth place with $8.9 million.
Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were ``Black and Blue'' ($8.4 million); ``Gemini Man'' ($4.1 million); ``The Lighthouse'' ($3 million); ``The Current War'' ($2.6 million); and ``Abominable'' ($2.1 million).
