Uber Pushes Back On State Law Requiring Ride Sharing Vehicles To Have Illuminated Signs

ENCINO (CNS) - A man who got out of an Uber car and tried to cross the Ventura (101) Freeway in Encino today was struck and killed by a California Highway Patrol cruiser that was responding to a 911 call from the driver, who reported that two passengers were fighting.

The unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene about 3:40 a.m. on the eastbound 101, west of Balboa Boulevard, said CHP Officer Tony Polizzi.

The sergeant driving the CHP patrol car was uninjured, according to the CHP.

According to reports from the scene, the fatally injured man was a backseat passenger in a westbound Uber car and was fighting with a front seat passenger, prompting the driver to briefly stop in the left lane near the center divider while calling 911. That's when the fatally injured man got out of the Uber, climbed over the center divider and was struck by the eastbound CHP patrol car, according to media reports.

An Uber representative was not immediately available for comment.

All eastbound freeway lanes were closed until about 9:30 a.m.
