Amaravathi Dam

Four members of the same family drowned during a trip to the Pambar dam in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Newlywed V Nivedha, 20, was trying to take a selfie with her family in the waist-deep water. While they were posing for the photo, 14-year-old Santosh slipped and fell, dragging his family members underneath the water.

Nivedha's husband, G Perumalsamy, managed to save his 15-year-old sister Yuvarani but was unable to help his wife, and their two relatives, Sneha, 22, Kanniga, 20. They were all pronounced dead at the scene.

"They wanted to take a selfie at this spot on the dam, and they slipped," S. Prabhakar, a senior police official from the district of Krishnagiri, told CNN. "The water level increased while they were there."

Over 250 people have died while attempting to take selfies since 2011. According to a study published in India's Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care, more than half of those deaths occurred in India. Overall, 72 percent of the people who die while taking selfies are men under the age of 30
