British Tour Company Thomas Cook Closes, Leaves Thousands Stranded Abroad

The world's oldest travel firm has collapsed and left more than a half-million people stranded and looking for other ways home.

The British travel group Thomas Cook shut down after it failed to get a financial aid package from its lenders after being more than $2.1 billion in debt.

More than 21,000 employees are being let go and the company’s global booking websites, credit card companies and even store fronts where their travel agents were in have been shut down.
