Overturned Big Rigs Prompt Closure of Southbound 605 Freeway in Long Beach

LONG BEACH (CNS) - A crash involving two overturned big rigs on the southbound San Gabriel River Freeway in Long Beach prompted the closure of the southbound lanes of the freeway near the accident site until at least 5:30 a.m., authorities said.

The accident occurred near the Willow Street offramp about 1:10 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

A news photographer at the scene said only one big rig, carrying a large carnival ride on each of its trailers, was involved, but the CHP could not immediately confirm the report.

An Orange County Fire Authority official told the photographer a hazardous materials team was cleaning up spilled gasoline and oil and the freeway would be closed until the cleanup was complete. The accident site was near the Long Beach/Los Alamitos border, prompting an OCFA response.

Traffic was being diverted off the freeway at Carson Street.

It was unclear if anyone was injured.

Details of what caused the big rigs to overturn were not immediately available.
