An elderly man from Arlington, Virginia was able to survive for five days on nothing but Coca-Cola after he fell in his kitchen. Police were called to investigate after a mail carrier noticed that his door had been left open for a few days and his mail was piling up.
The mail carrier began asking the man's neighbors if they had heard from him and one of them called the police.
When officers arrived, they found the man on his kitchen floor with a bottle of Coca-Cola within arms reach. They called paramedics and the man was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
"We were horrified and shocked, but we were really happy to hear about the Coke, that he could keep himself, you know, alive and okay until help came," Christen Bensten, who lives next door to the man, told WUSA9.
The news station reports that a similar incident happened in the neighborhood a few years back. In that instance, neighbors were too late and by the time they found the elderly woman she had passed away.
Bensten says that people in the neighborhood need to take care of each other and make sure they are checking in on the older residents who may live alone.
"It's kind of a mix in Arlington you have the young families with the kids, and then you have the older generation, and I think we do need to check in on them," said Bensten.
