Metro Bike Share Program Opens Several New Stations In North Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Several new Metro Bike Share stations opened today in North Hollywood, provided by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the city of Los Angeles.

Sixteen new stations that hold up to 150 bicycles were installed in North Hollywood, Toluca Lake and Valley Village.

An additional six stations with 50 bicycles will be added by the end of the year, according to Metro.

The stations are available at or near the Metro Red/Orange Line stations, the NoHo Arts District, the Chandler Bikeway and connect riders to the growing gallery, theatre, cafe and restaurant scene in the neighborhoods surrounding Lankershim and Magnolia boulevards.

“With its array of popular destinations and rich transit availability, North Hollywood is the ideal place to debut Metro's Bike Share Program in the San Fernando Valley,” Inglewood mayor and Metro board chairman James Butts said. “Residents and tourists alike will surely benefit from the new two-wheeled travel options we're offering.”

Other local destinations now accessible via Smart Metro Bikes include the Great Wall of Los Angeles, North Hollywood Amelia Earhart Branch Library, the Television Academy, North Hollywood Gateway and Campo de Cahuenga.

The bikes allow riders to lock their bikes at Smart Metro Bike Stations or lock them in other locations to bike racks for a fee.

Bikes can be unlocked using a Metro TAP card on the bike or through the Metro Bike Share app.

Rides on Smart Metro Bikes start at $1.75 for every 30 minutes.

“North Hollywood is one of Los Angeles's most unique neighborhoods, a vibrant and growing community full of families and young people who live, work and play in the area,” City Councilman and Metro board member Paul Krekorian said. “Within just a few blocks, you can ride your bike, walk to great shops and restaurants and hop on the bus or Metro to get where you need to go.”

Metro worked with the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) to determine the location of bike share stations in the North Hollywood area.

Convenience fees are $2 to lock a bike to a public rack within the Smart Metro Bike service area, or $20 to lock a bike to a public bike rack outside of the Smart Metro Bike service area.

The bikes will be operated by Bicycle Transit Systems and provided by BTS partner BCycle, which operates 40 bike share systems in metropolitan areas in the U.S. and abroad, according to Metro.

There are now 1,500 Metro Bikes and 150 stations in central Los Angeles, the Port of Los Angeles, North Hollywood and throughout the Westside.

Metro plans to expand the program to create a system of more than 4,000 bicycles countywide.
