Suspect Killed in Deputy-Involved Shooting in Hyde Park Neighborhood

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A suspect was killed in a deputy-involved shooting this morning in the unincorporated Hyde Park area of Los Angeles County near South Los Angeles and authorities searched for a second suspect.

The shooting occurred on Brynhurst Avenue near 71st Street around 1 a.m., when a deputy tried to pull over an SUV for an unspecified violation, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The passenger in the SUV got out of the vehicle and began to walk away, refusing orders from the deputy to stop, the LASD said.

“The deputy observed the suspect reaching into his waistband, possibly manipulating something in his waistband,” sheriff's Homicide Bureau Lt. Brandon Dean told reporters at the scene. “The deputy told the suspect to stop (and) show his hands, at which time the suspect did not comply. The suspect ultimately retrieved a handgun and fired at least one round we know of at the deputy.”

The suspect died at the scene and a weapon was found at the shooting location.

The deputy was not injured.

An active search was underway in the area for the second suspect, but a detailed description of the suspect was not released.
