LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Arraignment is scheduled today for a man accused of hitting a 75-year-old man in the head with an electric scooter in downtown Los Angeles.
Janai Washington, 41, who is homeless, was charged Friday with one felony count of elder or dependent adult abuse with an allegation that he used a deadly and dangerous weapon and one felony count of assault with a deadly weapon.
The charges include allegations of inflicting great bodily injury on an elderly and vulnerable victim, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
On June 13, Washington allegedly approached Jose Cancel, who was sitting in a chair at Sixth and Spring streets, and threw an electric scooter at him, hitting him in the head. The defendant is accused of then throwing the e-scooter again at the victim while he was on the ground, further injuring him.
A bystander intervened and the defendant fled. Washington was later identified by police and arrested last Wednesday.
Washington faces a possible maximum sentence of 10 years in state prison if convicted as charged, according to prosecutors.
