Authorities in the Dominican Republic have charged one man in connection with the shooting of former Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz. Prosecutors charged Eddy Feliz Garcia with attempted homicide and criminal association. They also released more details about the investigation. Féliz García is accused of driving the shooter to Dial Bar and Lounge, but his lawyers say he had no idea of the plot to kill Ortiz.
Officials have a second suspect in custody but are still trying to track down the person who pulled the trigger. They have not said what role the suspect played in the attack, or what charges he may face.
Police say they viewed surveillance footage from the area which showed two Hyundais following Ortiz before the attack. The suspected shooter was seen speaking with a man in one of the vehicles before jumping on the back of Féliz García's motorcycle. One of the cars was facing Ortiz when the shooting occurred.
Officials have not publicly stated a motive for the attack, but law enforcement sources told the Daily Mail that they believe a local drug lord put out a hit on Ortiz for having an affair with his wife.
Ortiz was flown to Boston for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. He had part of his gall bladder and intestines removed but is in good spirits and even took his first steps since the attack.
"Yesterday and this morning, David was able to sit up as well as take some steps," his wife, Tiffany Ortiz said. "His condition is guarded, and he will remain in the ICU for the coming days, but he is making good progress towards recovery."
