Sadly, Sheriff Alex Villanueva has announced that the Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy who was shot in Alhambra has passed away.

Deputy Joseph Gilbert Solano was shot in the head while waiting for food at a Jack in the Box on Monday.

He was off-duty and in regular clothes before he was randomly attacked in the restaurant.

According to officials, there was no apparent connection between Solano and the suspect.

The suspect, Rhett McKenzie Nelson, was arrested this week and is currently being held on a $2 million dollar bail.

After the shooting Solano was transported to USC Medical Center in grave condition as family, friends, and law enforcement colleagues came to pay their respects.

Sheriff Villanueva said this at the news conference about Solano, "Knowing what transpired, knowing that Deputy Solano did what we can expect every deputy to do - he confronted a threat, not knowing what it was," Villanueva said. "In a split second he lost his life."

As well, Solano was described as a dedicated family man. His children spoke as well and asked people to please not forget about their father.
