Attention Guys: You Have a Fertility Window, Too!

For years and years (and years) if a couple had problems getting pregnant, it was presumed that it was probably an issue with the woman. Sure he may have a low sperm count, or whatever, but HIS age was certainly not a focus. Men can theoretically fertilize an egg until their dying day -- but now it has been found that that is not without risks. Dr. Mark Trolice, Founder and Director of Fertility CARE-The IVF Center in Orlando, Florida, says men over 45 have a higher chance of creating a child who will develop autism or schizophrenia. Odds of gestational diabetes and premature birth are also increased with the dad's increased age.

Dr. Trolice says men can freeze their sperm and save it up for a better time just as women do, but it's way easier and cheaper for the guys.

Some helpful guidelines to improve sperm count from Dr. Mark Trolice:

• Maintain a healthy weight. A higher body mass index is linked to decreasing sperm count and motility.

• Don’t smoke. Drink in moderation. Both tobacco smoke and excessive alcohol consumption decrease sperm production. Passive smoke can negatively affect your female partner’s fertility.

• Exercise. In addition to improving general health, exercise increases antioxidant enzymes, which help protect sperm.

• Keep an eye on your prescriptions. Certain medications impact fertility, so discuss your medications with your doctor. Avoid medicines with testosterone!

Dr. Mark Trolice is Board-certified in OB/GYN and reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI). He is a repeat recipient of the American Medical Association's "Physician's Recognition Award."
