Homicide Suspect Arrested After Pursuit and Barricade

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - A homicide suspect was taken into custody today after leading police on a pursuit from downtown Los Angeles to the Del Rey- Culver City area, where he abandoned a vehicle, broke into an occupied house and barricaded himself, authorities said.

The man was taken into custody by a SWAT team about 6 a.m. after offivers surrounded the residence in the 11000 block of Barman Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. His name was not immediately released.

An LAPD SWAT team was able to get the residents out of the house around 3:20 a.m., Officer D. Orris of the LAPD Operations Center said. That left the suspect inside the house alone and the home surrounded by the SWAT team.

The chain of events began with a shooting about 11:55 p.m. Monday at Sixth Street and Maple Avenue, triggering a pursuit that ended with a crash at 12:23 a.m. around Berryman Avenue and Braddock Drive, police said.

The 36-year-old man shot downtown was taken to a hospital where he died, Orris said.

Officers found a passenger inside the suspect's vehicle who had been shot, LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery told reporters at the barricade scene. That person was taken to a hospital, where his vital signs were stable, the sergeant said.
