Sacramento Man Impaled by Tripod Dropped from Freeway Overpass

A van passenger being driven down Interstate 5 was impaled by a stolen tripod dropped from the overpass above.

The victim, a veteran, who was in the passenger seat when out of no where the yellow tripod hit the windshield and went through his lung and broke his ribs.

Later, the California Highway Patrol found the man they say stole and dropped the tripod, Matthew Thompson, a transient.

The injured vet is expected to make a full recovery and Thompson was arrested on a warrant, but may face a charge of attempted murder.
