The father of one of the young children who was killed during the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut has died of an apparent suicide. Officials say they responded to a call at the Edmond Town Hall and found 49-year-old Jeremy Richman unresponsive.

“This is a heart breaking event for the Richman family and the Newtown Community as a whole, the police department’s prayers are with the Richman family right now, and we ask that the family be given privacy in this most difficult time.” Lieutenant Aaron Bahamonde said in a Facebook post.

While the cause of death has not been officially determined by the Connecticut Medical Examiner’s Office, investigators say that Richman's "death does not to appear to be suspicious."

After losing his daughter Avielle, Richman started the Avielle Foundation and became a vocal advocate for mental health issues. His foundation had an office at the Edmond Town Hall.

Richman was also one of the people who filed a lawsuit against Alex Jones for making “abusive and outrageous false statements" that "perpetuated claims that the Sandy Hook massacre was staged and that the 26 families who lost loved ones are paid actors who faked their relatives’ deaths.”
