Park officials at Santa Anita say a horse had to be euthanized this morning after becoming injured during morning training. This is the 22nd equine to have died at the racetrack since the season began on Dec. 26.
The horse was identified as Princess Lili B, a 3-year-old filly according to the Daily Racing Form. The equine was put down after breaking both front legs around 8 a.m. Thursday. It's unclear how the horse was injured or when racing will return.
On Monday, Santa Anita reopened its main racetrack for limited workouts and officials said training would continue today at Santa Anita.
The facility shut operations down at the track on March 5 while a team of experts went over the soil and track conditions in an effort to find out why so many horses were becoming injured on the track. Park officials had targeted March 22 to reopen.
