'Captain Marvel' Opens With a Splash, Raking In Over $150M

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - “Captain Marvel” is having the biggest opening weekend of any film in 2019 so far, taking in an estimated $153 million at theaters in the United States and Canada, according to industry figures out today.

The Disney film, which stars Brie Larson in the title role, knocked off the top film of the last two weeks, “How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World,” which finished second with an estimated $14.6 million, according to Comscore.

“Tyler Perry's A Madea Family Funeral” was third with $12 million, followed by “Lego Movie 2: The Second Part” with $3.8 million, and “Alita: Battle Angel” with $3.2 million.

Rounding out the top 10 releases were “Green Book” ($2.4 million), “Isn't It Romantic?” ($2.4 million), “Fighting With My Family” ($2.1 million), “Greta” ($2.1 million) and “Apollo 11” ($1.3 million).
