POMONA (CNS) - A man allegedly driving drunk was arrested today following a collision on the San Bernardino (10) Freeway in Pomona between his car and a big rig that left his passenger dead, authorities said.
The crash occurred at 12:22 a.m. on the eastbound 10 Freeway near North Orange Grove Avenue, California Highway Patrol Officer Patrick Kimball said.
Nathan R. Anaya, 26, of Upland was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, CHP Officer C. Rodriguez said.
A man believed to be 35 years of age was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:31 a.m., Kimball said. His name was not released pending family notification.
The deceased was the right front passenger in a 1990 Lexus LS400 driven by Anaya, who allegedly veered into a 2009 Freightliner big rig that was parked on the right shoulder, Rodriguez said. The trucker was not injured.
Anaya was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital with lacerations to his face and placed under arrest, Rodriguez said.
``Alcohol is suspected to be a factor in this collision,'' Rodriguez said.
The CHP issued a SigAlert at 12:37 a.m. shutting down eastbound Nos. 2, 3 and 4 lanes in the area for the investigation. All lanes were reopened at 4:52 a.m.
