Mexican Drug Kingpin 'El Chapo' Found Guilty On All Counts

Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman

Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, who brutally ran the Sinaloa Cartel for three decades, was convicted for his crimes during his time as a drug kingpin. After six days of deliberations, the jury returned a guilty verdict on all ten charges, which included one count of engaging in a criminal enterprise, seven counts of drug trafficking, one count of illegal use of a firearm, and one count of conspiracy to launder narcotics proceeds.

The 11-week trial featured testimony from many former cartel members who described to the jury Guzman's brutality, sharing the details of his crimes, which included murder and torture. Jurors were kept sequestered and anonymous out of fear that Guzman's associates could threaten them.

Guzman's defense lasted just 30 minutes and tried to paint the witnesses as liars who were making up stories to get a better deal from prosecutors for the crimes they committed. Guzman will spend the rest of his life in a U.S. jail.
