no suspect found at Hare Krishna center

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Police today searched a building housing a Hare Krishna temple in the Palms area of Los Angeles after a man called authorities and claimed he was holed up inside the structure with explosives and weapons, but no suspect was found.

Officers went to the Hare Krishna Cultural Center near Regent Street and Watseka Avenue about 7 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

About 40 people were evacuated from the surrounding area, and police began working to determine if the man actually had explosives and was barricaded in the structure, LAPD Officer Meghan Aguilar said.

The standoff ended early this afternoon, when police announced that searchers had determined that no suspect was inside the building.

Aguilar said it was not known if the man was inside the building when he made the telephoned threat.
