LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti today announced the creation of a new office in his administration specifically to work on issues surrounding homelessness.
Christina Miller, who was named as the deputy mayor for city homelessness initiatives, previously served in the mayor's Office of Economic Opportunity.
“Christina is a dynamic leader with a passion for bringing people, organizations and institutions together to help Angelenos in desperate need get off the streets and rebuild their lives,” Garcetti said. “She has the skills to take charge of our work to defeat this urgent moral and humanitarian crisis, and I have every confidence that she will succeed.”
Garcetti said Brenda Shockley, deputy mayor for economic opportunity, will continue to head that office's efforts to identify the root causes of poverty and prevent people from becoming homeless, while Miller's office will oversee the work of the Unified Homelessness Response Center; serve as the mayor's lead homelessness liaison with county government and nonprofits; guide implementation of the A Bridge Home program to construct temporary homeless shelters; manage services on Skid Row; and lead teams focused on allocating Proposition HHH funds for the construction of affordable and supportive housing.
Miller joined Garcetti's administration in April, and was previously a consulting project manager on homelessness issues for Los Angeles World Airports.
