Nearly Two-Dozen Arrested for DUI over Thanksgiving Weekend

RIVERSIDE (CNS) - Twenty motorists were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in the Riverside metropolitan area during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, the California Highway Patrol reported today.

The drivers were taken into custody between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday during the CHP's statewide ``maximum enforcement period,'' when all available officers are deployed to catch DUI suspects, speeders and other traffic violators.

The arrests in Riverside and neighboring communities where the CHP has jurisdiction compares to 31 taken into custody during the same time last year, for the same offenses, according to the agency. No fatal crashes occurred in the metro area, unlike last Thanksgiving holiday weekend, when two people were killed in separate wrecks, according to the CHP.

The agency's next maximum enforcement campaign will begin the weekend before Christmas and conclude on Christmas night.
