LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Retired Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Alex Villanueva dramatically increased his lead over incumbent Jim McDonnell today, with an updated tally from last week's election showing him with a 22,192-vote lead.

When initial vote-counting initially ended after the Nov. 6 election, Villanueva had a 4,927-vote lead over McDonnell, but that edge shrank to just 335 votes when an updated tally was released Friday.

With the county still working its way through nearly 1 million ballots that still needed to be counted as of last week, the updated tally released Tuesday showed Villanueva with 987,609 votes, compared to 965,417 for McDonnell. It was not immediately clear how many ballots are still left to be counted.

Both candidates last week issued statements expressing confidence of emerging victorious.
