Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen passes away at 65

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has passed away at the age of 65 from complications of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma a statement released on behalf of the family by Vulcan Inc. said. Allen passed away in Seattle Monday afternoon. 

Allen's sister, Jody, called her brother "a remarkable individual on every level."

“While most knew Paul Allen as a technologist and philanthropist, for us he was a much-loved brother and uncle, and an exceptional friend. Paul’s family and friends were blessed to experience his wit, warmth, his generosity and deep concern,” she said in a statement. “For all the demands on his schedule, there was always time for family and friends. At this time of loss and grief for us – and so many others – we are profoundly grateful for the care and concern he demonstrated every day."

The Microsoft co-founder revealed he had restarted treatment for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma last month, more than nine years after first beating the disease. The onetime CEO left the software company after being diagnosed with the disease in 2009. 

Satya Nadella, the current CEO of Microsoft, said Allen was "indispensable" to Microsoft and the technology industry at large. He praised Allen, saying he learned a lot from him. 

"As co-founder of Microsoft, in his own quiet and persistent way, he created magical products, experiences and institutions, and in doing so, he changed the world," Nadella said in a statement. "Our hearts are with Paul’s family and loved ones. Rest in peace." 

Allen was ranked as one of the world's most wealthy individuals. He was ranked 44th on Forbes' 2018 list of billionaires with an estimated net worth of more than $20 billion. He was also known for owning the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers, the NFL's Seattle Seahawks and a stake in Seattle's soccer team, the Sounders.
